Problem

Problem

Indeed’s been looking for new opportunities that would fit into the company’s strategy. From initial market research, we found out that 51% of workers were planning to change jobs in 2018. Additionally, 24% of job seekers want to level up their careers. It signaled that job seekers might need guidance on how to be successful and grow in their careers

RESEARCH

Understand context

I spoke with direct stakeholders to better understand user problems and business opportunities to drive this initiative forward. These were my key takeaways:

  • Work Wellbeing was officially announced as one of Indeed’s 2030 ESG Commitments

  • Indeed conducted a quantitative study to understand the impact of Covid on job searching

  • Indeed hired leading academics from the University of Oxford to help refine a survey and framework

  • This project gives Indeed a competitive advantage in becoming a leader in the Work Wellbeing space

Stakeholder interviews

I kicked off the project by conducting stakeholder interviews. To understand my team's expectations, I scheduled 1:1s with key decision-makers. My main objective of the interviews was to understand user pain points, business opportunities, and build relationships with my new team

  • ~60M monthly searches worldwide around career information

  • The most popular queries are How to become a... and how to level up

  • Based on past internal surveys, we know that 24% of job seekers want to level up careers. 23% of job seekers want to change their current career path

Future is now

Future is now

My next goal was to create a consensus for UX strategy and the product vision. To do so, I brought the core-product team leads together and conducted a mix of activities. I concluded the workshop with a documented action plan and a vision prototype to move the product forward. Here are the outcomes:

  • Built agreement around business requirements and user problems

  • Brainstormed ideas and aligned on the feasible North Star that we can built in two years time

  • Defined a high level roadmap and key milestones

Flows and wireframes

I designed a user flow and high-fidelity mockups. I shared my progress with stakeholders and collected initial feedback. After a few iterations, I started preparing a research plan

User testing

User testing

From the evaluative research, I learned how satisfied participants were with the prototype. Additionally, identified the required changes to improve the experience. Despite a few minor bugs, user testing revealed that 5 out of 5 participants would use our product in the future

  • All participants mentioned that they’d use the product in the future

  • More detailed information about how to start a career would be useful

  • Most participants said that the content was informative. They were particularly excited about the salary information and the comparison tool

Filters & sorting

In the MVP, we did not include filters or sorting options on the jobs tab. After launching, job seekers frequently requested these features. I assumed that the absence of these functions was correlated with lower ratings

In the next iterations we included the most popular filters on indeed and improved the rating from 3.2 to 3.8

Companies page

The initial design for the companies tab included six sections: Top rated, Best compensation, Best work-life balance, Focus on career growth, Culture-driven, and Best management. However, it was discovered that the same companies were frequently displayed under all the dimensions, making the categories redundant

To address this issue, we implemented a general ratings filter, which increased our rating from 3.5 to 3.9

A/B tests

A/B tests

At the same time, I analyzed the existing data and searched for A/B test opportunities. One example might be the filters feature. Initially, there was low engagement with the feature, especially on mobile devices. Our hypothesis was that the filters button might’ve been easily overlooked. To address this, we created a new variant with a more visible function. As a result, the number of clicks on the filters in variant B increased by 10%

What I would do differently

What I would do differently

I would advocate even more for investing time and resources into building a strong IA during the MVP phase. Initially, directors assured me that we would prioritize it after the MVP launch. However, later on, there were many other initiatives that seemed to have higher priority. I tested discoverability and findability during initial concept testing and there weren’t any concerns, but it could become a usability problem if we introduce more content to pages.

Lessons

Lessons

From this project I learned that striving for perfection can hinder progress and that it's important to prioritize achieving "good enough" results. Additionally, I improved my negotiation skills to better advocate for users when working under time pressure.

Tradeoffs

Tradeoffs

The main tradeoff my team made was in regards to the curation of content for job seekers. While there was a user need to create content for job seekers who want to level up in their careers, we initially focused on those who want to change their careers. This decision was more aligned with Indeed's business model and revenue streams.
